Long ago when I heard
Yüan the Ninth sing your poems
How keenly I regretted
Not having known Sir Lu sooner!
Today as we meet and open the old scrolls
I observe many poems presented to Wei-chih.
Glancing at each other
We cover up our tears,
Overcome by feelings that cannot be put into words.
I am especially afflicted
For who but I can experience such emotions?
I hear that the white poplars
At his Kan-yang grave
Have already put forth
Long branches.
